The Position

Working collaboratively with a team of award-winning communications professionals, you will be responsible for increasing public awareness and differentiation for Plan International Canada and its mission.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Media and Public Relations, as Manager, Media and Public Relations, you will contribute to and lead media and public relations planning and execution, help drive positive media coverage and mitigate reputational risks across the organization. You will also work closely with 1-2 direct reports to develop and execute strategies to fulfill business objectives.

This role is highly integrated with various teams across the organization on campaigns, issues management and crisis communications initiatives, including Digital Communications, Brand Engagement, Content Strategy and Communications, Youth Engagement, Advocacy, Philanthropy, Marketing (Donor Experience and Donor Acquisition) and Programs departments, as well as develop relationships with agencies, external partners and third-party vendors.

What does success look like?

· Contribute to and lead development of communications and media relations strategies to support key organizational campaigns, including setting objectives, overseeing budget and executing tactics. These may include but are not limited to: International Day of the Girl, Gifts of Hope, brand campaigns, International Women’s Day, and other local and global awareness days such as Menstrual Hygiene Day, Equal Pay Day, etc.

· Develop communications materials such as: media pitches, news releases, contributed articles, blogs, briefing documents, need-a-source documents, proactive messaging and reactive responses.

· Contribute to and lead on tactics to increase Plan International Canada spokespeople’s visibility and profile, including strengthening relationship-building with journalists.

· Media train and position Plan International Canada spokespeople, including subject matter experts and youth ambassadors, as accessible and compelling sources of information for specific campaigns and on an ongoing basis.

· Proven skills as a public relations professional able to proactively identify media opportunities and stay on top of potential reactive issues.

As our ideal candidate you will have:

· An aptitude for storytelling and developing creative ways to deliver key messages with superior written and verbal communication, particularly in the realm of gender equality, human rights and international development.

· Experience contributing to/leading successful and innovative projects and public relations campaigns.

· Experience working with journalists and securing positive coverage for organizations, including gender equality, girls’ rights, development and humanitarian issues.

· A flexible and adaptable work style; open to collaboration with diverse and high-performing teams and individuals; thriving in a fast-paced evolving work culture.

·A bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing or a related discipline.
