The Position

  • The Senior Manager, Business Development (BD) will lead proposal development work, including design, writing, coordination and processes for Plan International Canada’s Programs Department.
  • This position works closely with a diverse technical team of thematic advisors (in the areas of health, education, gender equality, food security, climate change adaptation, water and sanitation, economic empowerment, child protection and emergencies) to develop high-quality proposals for institutional donors.
  • As required, the Senior Manager, BD also provides support to proposals for corporate donors, major donors and foundations, leads on the maintenance of a comprehensive grants pipeline, and provides inputs into other business and proposal development processes and systems.

What does success look like?

  • Lead on program design and proposal development to ensure they meet donor format and technical requirements, are clear, compelling and well presented.
  • Provide leadership to 1 - 2 direct reports and support team members in navigating challenges and identifying solutions, ensuring integration and knowledge-sharing practices
  • Undertake desk research related to designing programming and preparing proposals
  • Support field office capacity regarding design and development of project proposals, budgeting and contracting
  • Develop supplementary materials such as infographics and presentations.
  • Support efficient proposal development processes, systems and pipeline of projects and other information management tools

As our ideal candidate you will have:

  • A proven track record in successful business development or grants acquisition in the field of international development, preferably with a focus on gender equality and child rights
  • Strong leadership and people management skills in building productive working relationships with team members, colleagues, field offices, donors and partners
  • The ability to successfully manage multiple projects while simultaneously coordinating communication across departments and levels within an organization to ensure improved efficiency, while maintaining high quality results
  • Solid understanding of results-based management (RBM) and other frameworks related to monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL)
  • In-depth and broad-based understanding of multiple sectors and approaches to international development including a wide range of institutional donors, especially Global Affairs Canada (GAC)
  • Demonstrated ability to review, synthesize information and produce compelling proposals (writing samples will be requested)
  • Strong competency in budget and contract review
  • Exceptional English writing, editing and proofreading abilities
  • A passion for mission-driven work and personal values aligned with those of Plan International Canada’s organizational values
