The Position

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Business Development, this position will lead on proposal development and support business development for the International Programs and Philanthropy departments of Plan International Canada.

This position works closely with a diverse team of technical advisors and donor prospect managers to provide high quality project design and proposal coordination support for corporate, major gift, institutional, domestic and other funders. As the Business Development Manager, you will lead on project design, proposal writing and editing, budget development and other financial requirements. This will include coordination with other Plan International offices and project partners to ensure proposals and related materials meet donor requirements, are clear, compelling and well-presented. The Business Development Manager, serves as a vital link between the International Programs and Philanthropy & Marketing teams to ensure quality program design and compliance.

What does success look like?

• Working with the Philanthropy team, Prospect Managers and others in Plan International Canada’s Programs and Public Engagement teams, lead the proposal development coordination for compelling funding proposals for a variety of institutional and private donors, including seasonal campaigns such as Gifts of Hope

• Work with Business Development and Compliance Managers to present project budget information in a tailored, transparent manner for donors

• Support field offices through the design and development of project proposals, budgeting and contracting

• Undertake desk research and incorporate feedback from Technical Advisors and Program Managers in the areas of health, education, food security, economic development, gender, water and sanitation and child protection to ensure technically sound design

• Develop supplementary materials such as infographics, presentations, and training materials.

• Support efficient proposal development, ensuring proposals align with strategy, address match requirements and meet organizational good practice

As our ideal candidate you will have:

• Excellent English writing, editing and proofreading skills, including preparation of successful project proposals

• Proficiency in French and/or Spanish is an asset

• A strong team player and integrator with ability to collaborate across departments and functions within a large, cross-cultural team

• Excellent ability to research and analyze diverse information quickly and accurately in line with donor requirements and Plan International’s principles, mission and approaches

• In-depth and broad-based understanding of multiple sectors and approaches to international development including a wide range of institutional, corporate and other donors

• Understanding of and skills in business development, particularly in the area of grants

• Good understanding of international development issues and related policy debates

• Advanced formatting skills in MS Word and Excel. Skills in other computer software and online tools would be an asset in order to present information in a multitude of compelling and innovative ways

• Ability to multitask and work efficiently in order to meet often short deadlines in a multilayered/matrix team environment

• Excellent project management, budget development and contract review skills

• University degree in relevant discipline (international development, communications) and/ or equivalent professional experience
